2006 Capitol Hill Day: “Osteopathic
Medical Education”
About the Event:
The 2006 AACOM Capitol Hill Day will
be held on Wednesday, June 21, 2006. This
will be an opportunity for the osteopathic
medical education community to come to
Washington, DC to lobby their Members of
Congress on issues related to medical education.
The day will consist of a breakfast briefing
on the issue you will be advocating, followed
by meetings with your Senators, Members
of Congress and their staff. Lunch will
be provided during the day, and the event
will conclude with a reception.
The main issue for Hill Day will be restoration
of funding for the health professions education
programs under Title VII of the Public Health
Service Act. The fiscal year 2006 Departments
of Labor, Health and Human Services, Education
and Related Agencies Appropriations drastically
reduced funding for the Title VII health professions
education programs. The reduction resulted
in a 51% overall cut from the fiscal year 2005
level. The President's proposed budget
for fiscal year 2007 would eliminate funding
for nearly all of the Title VII programs. Title
VII provides funding for the only Federal programs
designed to train providers in interdisciplinary
settings to respond to the needs of special
and underserved populations, as well as increase
minority representation in the health care
workforce and thereby improving the distribution,
quality and diversity of the health professions
workforce.
